Seventy-one teenagers in San Francisco have pulled off what many seasoned filmmakers struggle to achieve—conceiving, producing, and premiering an original film in a matter of weeks.

The result is “JAR”, a surreal dark comedy packed with jailbreaks, glitter bombs, and shrink rays. Guided by filmmaker Joe Talbot and his summer program 48 Hills, 24 Frames, the teens handled everything from writing and directing to scoring and acting.
The script came together in just four days, with nine young writers shaping the story’s chaotic and satirical tone. On set, participants worked 10-hour days, often switching between multiple crew roles. A chase sequence was filmed on closed-off city streets—without permits—adding to the production’s guerrilla spirit.
Talbot brought in serious industry support, including cinematographers from Euphoria and The Bear, producer Khaliah Neal, and Oscar-nominated composer Emile Mosseri. Their mentorship gave the teens a crash course in professional filmmaking while keeping creative control in youth hands.
The premiere at Chinatown’s historic Great Star Theater drew a full house and ended with a standing ovation. Behind-the-scenes footage rolled during the credits, capturing the energy, collaboration, and problem-solving that defined the project.
For many of the teens, “JAR” is just the beginning. Some plan to apply to film schools or start their own independent projects, while others aim to return next year as mentors. Talbot has hinted at future collaborations with the same group.
Projects like “JAR” remind us that independent film isn’t just about budgets or equipment—it’s about vision, community, and the willingness to create something bold with the resources you have.
Would you watch a youth-made dark comedy like “JAR”? Or better yet—would you join the crew?
